Books I've Read Recently

The Tattooist of Auschwitz

This is based on the life of Lale Sokolov and I think the fact it is an account of real events makes it even more gripping. Books about this time in history are always harrowing and quite difficult to wrap your mind around but what I found different about this account of Auschwitz was the beautiful glimmers of courage, hope and ultimately love that can blossom even in the darkest moments. I read this book in a couple of days, I wanted to know what was to happen to Lale so couldn’t put it down. If you need a quick but thought-provoking read then I highly recommend adding this to your reading list.

A River in Darkness: One Man’s Escape from North Korea

I haven’t finished this, I often have a few books that I leave and come back to, for many reasons but the fact I haven’t been able to get to the end of this particular book is because it is just so heartbreaking. This is how Amazon summarise it, ‘The harrowing true story of one man’s life in—and subsequent escape from—North Korea, one of the world’s most brutal totalitarian regimes’

It really is harrowing, the humiliation, suffering and loss that this man endures during his life in North Korea are unimaginable at times. I found it was so dark and sad in parts that it was hard to read. I feel guilty that I am unable to finish it and can put it down because this is someone’s account of real-life events and they had to live them. I almost feel I have to finish it because Masaji Ishikawa was brave enough not only to survive this ordeal but commit his story to paper.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

Yes, yes. I know everyone (literally everyone) is reading this at the moment and I jumped on the bandwagon. It is a slow burner, in the beginning, I was worried that maybe I just wasn’t going to get the hype but about a quarter of the way in the story steps up and you get to know Eleanor a little more and start to will her character on. It is an easy, quick read but the story and characters are endearing, kind and it makes you want to be more friendly and compassionate. If you’re on the fence about reading this, I say buy it & read it. I guarantee you will enjoy it.

BOOKS I'VE READ LATELY 2018

The House at Bishopsgate

The funny thing about this book is I read it without realising that it is, in fact, the last book in a trilogy. Looking back now I have finished this book I think it is important that you read the first two books because they introduce the characters and you’re invested in the story and its history. I am tempted to go back and read them just so I can add some background to the story. Amazon summarises this as ‘Vividly evoking Jacobean society, The House at Bishopsgate is a sumptuous, richly woven story of marital secrets and sexual jealousy, from a master of historical fiction’.

I liked the story but didn’t connect with the main character, I found her a little annoying and meek. I wanted her to act more like the lady of the house. That being said I did like how descriptive it was about the house and London, I often felt like I could hear the comings and goings of the maids and the busy London street. I wouldn’t say this is a page turner, more of a slow read, the final few chapters were a little more lively. Let me know if you have read this trilogy and if I should read the first two.

The Lightkeeper’s Daughters

I have literally just finished this book, I found myself racing through it just so I could find out what happens. It is a page-turner and the story reminded me of the Light Between The Oceans. I think it’s because both books are set at a lighthouse on quite a remote Island. This book has so many twists that keep you guessing right up until the very last page. I was completely gripped. I don’t want to give anything away but it is set at a lighthouse station on the Ontario side of Lake Superior and you follow the life of the family who controls the light. It is heartbreaking and heartwarming, a real rollercoaster of life and emotion. I loved it and thought there was something quite magical about the remoteness of the lighthouse and how isolated they were out there.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret

I saw the film over Christmas and was blown away by the story and the way it was filmed, I didn’t even know it was based on a book, or how beautiful the book was. This is a lovely story but the book has these incredibly detailed drawings & illustrations that bring the characters to life. It is like a graphic novel and it made the book even more special. The book is about an Orphan clock keeper and thief, twelve-year-old Hugo who lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station, where his survival depends on secrets and anonymity. I urge you to read the book and watch the film, both are fantastic in their own way. Thank you Hayley (hayleyfromhome) for lending this to me, I may have to buy my own copy just to look at the pictures all over again.

Products Currently In Use March 2018

balanceMe Super Moisturising Bodywash

I do love a fancy body wash, it’s one of my guilty pleasures. This balanceMe one smells like a spa and leaves my skin feeling like I’ve had a pamper. It is infused with a skin-softening blend of Benzoin, Yarrow and Shea Butter, so it leaves skin feeling soft, supple and hydrated. The handy pump makes it easy to use in the shower when your hands are all slippery and it also means you don’t dispense more product that you need & that makes me happy. It has a refreshing, uplifting scent which is perfect for the morning and I like that it’s sulphate free, and 99% natural too!

SheaMoisture Argan Oil and Almond Milk Shampoo & Conditioner

This new release from SheaMoisture is the answer to frizz-free, sleek hair. It doesn’t weigh my hair down or cause product build up which means my hair looks healthy and glossy for longer.  It has been formulated specifically for curly, frizzy unmanageable hair, it is formulated with almond milk, argan oil, marshmallow root extract and raw shea butter to help tame frizz, detangle and lock in moisture. So your hair is in good hands with this duo!

Key Benefits

  • Helps to control frizz
  • Smoothes hair
  • Helps to improve manageability
  • Cruelty-free
  • Contains organic ingredients and fair trade ingredients
  • Detangles hair
  • Revives tired hair
  • Lightweight
  • Seals hair cuticles against humidity

This is also great, if like me your hair can often feel quite coarse and hard to style, this duo smooths and tames whilst giving the hair a real boost of moisture which helps it to feel softer for longer. Oh, and it smells amazing – which is always important in my book, especially when it comes to haircare.

Soap & Glory 3-in-1 Vitamin C Face Wash

These bottles always last me for months, it never seems to run out. I use this morning or night as a first cleanse. It has a gel consistency with tiny jojoba scrub-beads which are not at all abrasive but just help smooth skin and get rid of any dead skin which helps your skin glow from within. This 3 in 1 face wash cleanses, polishes and energises skin. It contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids and Soap & Glory’s exclusive SUPERFRUIT™ YUZU complex.

I have been through quite a few bottles of this over the years and it’s a product I love having in my skincare routine because you can use it daily, it isn’t drying or striping so you can use it whenever your heart desires (I use it daily). I like to have a gentle, daily exfoliator in my routine, it helps reduce the build-up of dirt and grime which in turn stops me getting so many breakouts. This is a great face wash to have in your collection and like I said it lasts forever!

Merumaya Skin Brightening Exfoliating Peel

This gentle exfoliating mask makes it easy to get radiant, smooth refreshed looking skin. No more scrubbing required. You just apply a generous layer of this gel and sit back, relax and let it work its magic. The Glycolic Acid integrated with Pomegranate Enzymes help eliminate dead skin whilst Aloe Vera and Allantoin soothe, calm and balance skins moisture levels.

Key Benefits

• Reduce blemishes, congestion and blockages.
• Refine and reduce the appearance of pores.
• Re-texturise all skin types so it is smoother
• Soften signs of skin-ageing.
• Prevent ingrown hairs for men

It is a fast acting mask so you don’t need to sit for ages, waiting. This mask re texturisers skin in 5 – 15 minutes, I usually leave it on for a solid 10 minutes, which is great if you are pushed for time. I love how effective it is and my skin is visibly more radiant after using it, doesn’t sting or leave my skin red afterwards, in fact, I often use it in the morning so my skin looks glowing with or without makeup.

Let me know what products you are enjoying at the moment and if you’ve tried any of the ones I have mentioned in this post.

Baylis & Harding The Fuzzy Duck Pink Gin Fizz Collection

The Fuzzy Duck Pink Gin Fizz Collection

Baylis Harding Fuzzy Duck Mothers Day Gift Ideas

I have reviewed so many lovely Baylis & Harding products over the years but their most recent collections, Rosé Prosecco Fizz and the new Pink Gin Fizz, look and feel so much more luxurious! I may have to go so far as to say they’ve been my favourite collections to date.

The design is so luxurious looking and the scents are a great mix of feminine, fun and sweet. I also love the sheer range of products and gift sets available in both these latest limited edition collections. They are just my goto brand for affordable beauty gifts. You can get everything from a small token gift to larger more special gift sets. This latest Pink Gin Fizz Collection is just perfect for Mother’s Day, especially if you’re on a budget but still want a gift that looks, smells and feels luxurious, Baylis and Harding really are excellent at affordable luxury.

The Fuzzy Duck Mother's Day Gift Ideas

This Pink Gin Fizz Collection is Limited Edition and is part of The Fuzzy Duck range which has a lovely fresh, sophisticated and slightly sweet, fruity fragrance to evoke memories of Baylis & Harding’s boutique inn (called The Fuzzy Duck) which is nestled in the Cotswolds and is famous for its gin cocktails! (I’d love to go there just for a few cocktails, I love gin!)

This collection has a more modern, spring feel to it & I think this collection is fantastic for modern Mums or Mums that are young at heart. My Mum turns 50 this year & I know she will be thrilled to receive a gift from this range.

Fuzzy Duck Pink Gin Fizz Candles

Set of Baylis & Harding The Fuzzy Duck Candles Pink Gin Fizz

These candles have such a Kate Spade feel to them, I love the fresh, modern designs and the colour combinations. I’m so tempted to keep them for myself (my Mum will never know) or I could split up the trio and gift them as individual candles, which would still be a great option.

This set of 3 candles comes in a stunning pink, white and gold gift box, with a fuzzy duck ribbon around the edge, Baylis & Harding have really stepped up their game with the presentation of this collection, I am so impressed. Again the Pink Gin Fizz scent is modern with that mix of sweet and fruity which makes a nice Spring scent.

  • Perfect if you like to change your home fragrance more regularly or use in different rooms around your home
  • Total burn time of each candle is 10 hours
  • Presented in stunning glass jars with coordinating design details
  • Presented in a stylish gift box making it the perfect Mother’s Day gift
  • Fabulous new springtime fragrance

Candles always make fantastic gifts and this trio are such a nice sweet, fresh scent. I think it will be super popular with most people because it isn’t overpowering or sickly sweet. Oh, & the packaging is adorable too, I am going to keep the jars to store makeup brushes in once the candles have been used, they’re just too pretty to throw away.

The Fuzzy Duck Travel Cup Set

Baylis & Harding Fuzzy Duck Cup and Sock Set £10

This beautifully packaged gift set is one of my favourites. I really like the simple, pretty gold pattern on the travel mug, oh and its pink lid! The cup is very good quality and holds a pretty decent sized cup of tea. That is what I have been putting in mine. It is easy to drink from, drip-free and keeps your cuppa warm whilst you enjoy it on the go. I’ve even had a few people ask where it was from.

Also in the set are the perfect pampering duo – the answer to soft, smooth feet. A 50ml foot balm which smells sweet and fruity and will stop your feet drying out. Also the fluffiest pink socks you will ever feel. Very cosy and soft, ideal for the freezing weather we’ve been having in the UK. The socks are great to put on after you’ve applied the foot balm. Say hello to soft pampered feet!

  • Set contains 50ml foot balm & pink super soft socks
  • A fabulously co-ordinating travel cup

INGLOT 10 Pan Freedom System Palette

I have spoken about my love of INGLOT quite a few times and featured this palette a lot on my blog over the past couple of years, I really do use it all the time so it is only right that I keep putting it in my favourites. The shadows are fantastic quality and the range of colours and finishes is almost overwhelming, it took me ages to finally decide on the 10 shadows to put into my palette but the process was a lot of fun.

I love the palette itself, the magnetic lid which does not budge or come off in your makeup bag, and it is also actually quite slim. The pans are a very decent size and I pretty much have all of my favourite shadows with me in one cute palette. Let me know if you have tried INGLOT eyeshadows & if you have built your own palette too.

Essence Fresh & Fit Foundation

I can’t believe I haven’t spoken about this foundation sooner, I bought it whilst in Amsterdam last September (you can get it in the UK) and it has become one of my most used foundations. It’s a nice creamy consistency, it’s easy to blend and buff into your skin. I’d say it gives a nice even medium coverage, it covers imperfections and blemishes but still feels lightweight on my skin. Which is everything I look for in a base – decent coverage but that feeling that my skin can still breath!

This foundation is enriched with a complex of vitamin b3, e, pro-vitamin b5 and cranberry water, it is fantastic to see a budget-friendly foundation with such fantastic skincare benefits added to their formula. These ingredients are going to help your skin glow, look refreshed and awake.

The staying power of this foundation was for sure better when I used a primer but that is true for most foundations on my skin as I tend to get an oily t-zone. I would say this gave my skin a natural radiance and didn’t settle into my pores. It looks fresh, as the name would suggest and it’s just am easy to wear medium coverage base! I love it.

It comes packaged in a lovely glass bottle with a handy pump, the only drawback is the shade range, although I managed to find a good match for my skin tone this foundation only comes in 4 shades which isn’t so great. I hope they add more options in the future. Overall if you’re looking for a new cruelty-free, vegan foundation then I highly recommend checking out this Essence offering and it is only £5!

Essence Cosmetics Fresh and Fit Foundation

NIOD Photography Fluid Opacity 12%*

This is nothing short of liquid magic! It has been dubbed airbrush in a bottle – so what is it I hear you cry? It is a skin perfecting serum which uses refracting prism technology to even out all skin tone and gives you the most amazing natural healthy glow. It is flipping amazing.

This is a highlighter, primer and serum in one, it instantly blurs imperfections and gives a healthy dewy, even-toned radiance. Designed to create a photo-ready finish on all skin types, this complexion perfector creates a lit-from-within glow in seconds with a wide variety of light-refracting prisms, tone and hue correctors, and photo-finishing technologies.

Apply to your skin alone or under foundation to add sheer radiance and correct discolouration. It can also be mixed with other products for subtle radiance. Used under, over, or mixed with liquid foundation if you prefer more coverage.  It’s such an easy product to incorporate into your makeup routine. I haven’t ever used a product quite like this & I just can’t get across to you just how incredible it is, although I am trying.  I should do a whole post on this one product!

It is also vegan, cruelty-free and alcohol-free.

INGLOT Eyeshadow Palette Makeup

Benefit Dandelion Shy Beam Liquid Highlight

If you’re looking for a subtle more natural highlight then this is the one. It is a nude, pink semi-matte liquid highlight that gives your skin a refreshed, healthy radiance. It is easy to apply, I just use the brush to place the product on the tops of my cheeks and down the centre of my nose – it also looks pretty on your brow bones and I blend it is either with my beauty blender or just my finger. It looks pretty when the light hits it and what I really like is the fact there is no glitter or shimmer. It is a great everyday radiance booster and also looks pretty mixed with your foundation. These little Benefit liquid products last forever and are so easy to throw in your handbag, I often like to reapply throughout the day to refresh my makeup.

MUA LUXE Glow Beam Cushion Highlighter

Not quite as subtle as the Benefit highlighter, this MUA Cushion highlight offers more of a peachy – golden, warm-toned glow. The packaging is pretty although a little bulky and the puff is handy, but I just don’t reach for it. I prefer to use my beauty blender to ensure I apply it evenly. It is a liquid cushion product and I am waiting to see just how long it stays moist as I have a feeling it will dry out pretty quickly, that being said I do love using this as an evening highlight and it can look quite subtle or if you want more on an intense look you can build up the colour & effect to be more intense.

It is always nice to see affordable brands releasing on-trend products so we can all try them and Cushion makeup was certainly popular last year. Have you tried any cushion products, if so are you sold on them or think they’re too much faff.

MUA LUXE Glow Beam Liquid Highlighter

Benefit Dandelion Shy Beam Liquid Highlighter

Soap & Glory Supercat Eyeliner

When it comes to drugstore liquid liner Soap & Glory take the top prize, their Supercat liner ticks all of the boxes. It’s pigmented, sets down the perfect amount of product, doesn’t drag and the fine nib allows you to apply either a neat line or build it up to be more bold and thick.

This is a liner that would allow even the most self-confessed eyeliner novice to create the perfect winged liner. The nib gives you full control and isn’t too firm so you can create smooth lines without having to keep going over the same spot which often leads to the product bleeding into fine lines and getting very messy. This is one product everyone needs in their makeup bag (although I am sure most of you already own it). It’s pigmented, easy to use and long wearing.

Soap & Glory Gloss Stick in Nudist

Lip crayons are my goto lip product of choice, I find them so easy to use and this Soap and Glory one is a stunning everyday shade. It is in the colour Nudist and it enhances your lip colour giving them a pretty glossy finish. It’s a natural, subtle shade which has been living in my handbag – I apply it even when I’m wearing no other makeup, it makes me feel somewhat put together. Not only do they give your lips a subtle wash of colour but the formula is also very moisturising, oh & they smell so good too – I think it is a vanilla scent.

Real Techniques PowderBleu Soft Complexion Brush*

I mostly use this brush for applying powder foundation but it also works well for blush too. This Soft Complexion Brush has a small, dense head which makes buffing in the powder so much more effective. I also love the long slim handle which feels nice in your hand makes applying my makeup really easy. This collection is stunning and incredible quality, it looks and feels luxurious and that deep blue colour is gorgeous and makes me want to use them all the time.

Let me know what you have been loving this past month & if you’ve discovered anything new that I need to try. I am on the hunt for a new mascara, I’d love it if you’d leave me suggestions in the comments.
