Fowey Cornwall – Goodbye Summer

We are well into October now & the weather has turned colder. Autumn is in full swing, I look forward to this time of year, it is my birthday month (always a plus) and I love the changing colours and the cosy darker evenings. That being said I am sad to say goodbye to Summer. 2020 has been an odd year to say the least and this Summer has felt up and down. I didn’t do very much at all, staying very close to home. I am lucky to call Cornwall home and although it has been so much busier this year with people holidaying in Britain & doing their staycation, I still managed to get out and enjoy what is essentially my own backyard. Nothing like a pandemic to force you into being a tourist in your local area.

I have been browsing through the photos I took over the past few months, April – Sept and thought I would share them almost like a photo diary of some beautiful places we visited. Cornwall did not let us down, the weather was exceptionally warm this year, and I am so thankful for that. The sunshine made such a positive impact on my mood and helped me feel less isolated and cooped up.

Make sure you head off the beaten track a little, the high street is of course worth a visit but the small, pedestrianised backstreets are quiet and beautiful. Winding streets are everywhere, lined with classic Cornish cottages which are often painted in lovely pastel colours & will make you daydream about packing in the 9-5 and moving to the peace and quiet.

Also, Fowey river is a popular place to kayak, sail and enjoy the water. They have guided boat tours or you can hire a small boat or kayak and explore the river yourself, or head out around the coast.

One of our favourite places to stop in Fowey, is Readymoney. It is a beautiful sandy cove and if you time it right it can feel like your own private beach. The beach shop is incredible too, you can get a coffee and treat yourself to a slice of cake, ice cream or even a locally made sausage roll. They have a number of vegan options, which is always fantastic to see. They also have a lot of lovely gift ideas and mementoes, mostly locally made. The beach & shop are well worth the short walk from the village, along the river. I always have to get a tub of the vegan ice cream.

Fowey is a charming, small harbour town and over the past 5 years we have seen a number of quality restaurants and independent shops and cafés open. Less classic seaside beach tat and more locally made, handcrafted quality goods and wonderful food. Fitzroy, Bufala Pizzeria and Brown Sugar are amongst our top places to get food. Although if you want something quick and Cornish, Fowey has quite a few Bakeries, so you will be spoilt for choice.

Have you been a tourist in your local area? Let me know if you have ever visited Fowey, or where your favourite destinations are in Cornwall.

This Weeks Happy – Exploring Fowey

Pretty Fowey Town

Exploring Fowey Cornwall

I live less than 5 miles from the beautiful harbour town of Fowey but I very rarely go there. I tend to head in the other direction but I wanted to go there for a sunset walk while it was Winter and quiet (before all the tourists descend).

I love exploring the cobbled windy streets & taking photos of the beautiful houses. One of the things I love about Fowey is the river, its beautiful and it makes me feel calm and peaceful. I like to sit looking out over the river whilst the sun sets and it’s the perfect end to the day.

Light Shop Fowey

Fowey has the perfect selection of shops including my favourite homeware shop Brocante, a very small but well stocked Joules boutique as well as lots of places to eat and get yummy cakes to take home. Also on this lastest visit I stumbled across this Industrial Lighting Shop which was incredible and well worth a visit. They had a huge selection of nautical and industrial reclaimed options, I have my eye on one in particular and I think I am going to pop back and treat myself to it.

Sams Diner Meal

We really wanted to visit our favourite place to eat in Fowey, Sams but it was closed for refurbishment (typical) so we drove to their new Diner. To my surprise they had quite a few Vegan options, including a Vegan Hot Dog (which sounded very tempting) but I opted for the Falafel Burger which came with chips and a cabbage salad. It was delicious & huge. I love an old school sesame seed bun, not these brioche buns which burgers seem to be served on nowadays.

The Diner is new and I thought it was a little cold inside and I am not 100% sure about the decor, it was a little hit & miss but the menu is good and the staff were very helpful when letting me know about their Vegan options. They also do an extensive healthy breakfast menu, so we might pop back one morning to give that a go, breakfast is my favourite meal of the day.

We are planning a day to Penzance next week and quite honestly I can’t believe we have lived in Cornwall for 18 months and haven’t visited yet. I’m really looking forward to it, if you have any recomendations for places to eat and drink in Penzance let me know.

Exploring Cornwall Series

I have missed a few weeks of my Cornwall posts, since returning home from Scotland back in June we have been busy, busy with work and in all honesty until recently the weather has been pretty pants. When we do have a nice day we try and make the most of it, this Summer the nice days seem to feel few and far between.

We have kept our days out very local lately visiting Fowey, Truro, Falmouth and our local village (Charlestown). We do love a pretty harbour town and along the South Coast of Cornwall, we are quite spoilt for choice. So we tend to head out for walks along the coastal paths & end up in a harbour – wishing we lived in one of the sweet cottages that line them.

Big news (for Cornwall) a beautiful new Waitrose opened in Truro and they have a lovely separate shop dedicated to Cornish produce and its so nice, they also have a Cornish cafe serving locally sourced produce too. So we have been doing much of our shopping there and stopping for lunch too.

Cornwall is getting busy with Summer holiday visitors so every journey takes so much longer, so that is another reason we are staying closer to home. Our local beach has some cute pop-up restaurants, cafe’s and a small outdoor theatre, it feels like you are on the Mediterranean coast and we have been spending many an evening down there sipping cocktails & enjoying the sunshine. The water is still too cold for me but lots of people are getting out in the sea and I have seen people doing Yoga classes down on the beach too. I feel lucky having such a nice beach so close by & plan on spending as much time down there as possible.

I hope you’re all having a lovely Summer so far, maybe some of you are planning a visit to Cornwall this year?

Cornwall Week #3

Polkerris Cottages

We are starting to get in to our groove in Cornwall, and have found our perfect spot for coffee everyday and favourite evening walk (we are creatures of habit). This week I also turned 37, because we had just spent a fortune on the move we kept celebrations low key and took a trip to Polkerris and Fowey. We have been before a couple of years ago and it is so close to where we live so it was nice just to pop there for a couple of hours. It started off a little cloudy but turned into such a beautiful sunny morning it was so nice to spend some time by the river and relax.

I don’t think I will ever get tired of seeing the sea or the beautiful white wash cottages.
