Photo Diary

Back in 2020 / 2021 I really fell back in love with Cornwall, before that I thought I was over living here, it felt too remote (it still does at times), and I was yearning for city life. Being unable to leave the county for so long made us appreciate what we have right on our doorstep. We made the most of Cornwall being quiet (again) by exploring the local area and getting out walking. I noticed throughout 2021/2022 that I was going out less and less, to a point where I was avoiding leaving the house. So I made a pact with myself that, even if it was just a short walk around my neighbourhood, that I would try to get out as often as I could. Not setting any set rules or even committing to going out daily, just that I would try very hard to leave the house as regularly as I could.

Photography gave me that reason to go out, I had forgotten how much I loved taking pictures, and being stuck at home had taken away the joy for me, but on my walks I started to take my camera with me, and it worked, I stayed out longer than I thought I would, and I began to appreciate my local area.

The photos in this post were taken on my journey to better mental health. Although as I write this in my mental health is not 100%, and I still find it hard some days to leave the house, but I know that I’m not alone in feeling like that. My camera is still my creative outlet, and I need to remember just to do my best and when the world starts to feel too busy those are the moments that I need to remember to slow down and not take in all the negative noise.

Some things that make me happy are, the Flamingo ice cream van at the top of Fistral beach in Newquay which has the best vegan raspberry ripple! I can’t resist, it is well worth a visit if you’re ever in the neighbourhood. Oh, & Sprout Health Food Shop has the cutest courtyard where you can have a coffee, and they serve amazing Vegan food. It is such a peaceful space, and it feels like you’re on the Amalfi Coast not Newquay.

May 2021Spring in Cornwall

The Lawn Club ManchesterI do pop up to Manchester to see family, It’s nice to have an excuse to leave the county and enjoy one of my favourite cities. We always try to visit a couple of times a year, we always squeeze in a trip in August, as we got married in Manchester 17 years ago (and lived there for many years). We love visiting all our favourite places and seeing how the city has changed in the last 20+ years.

It is a place that always gets my creative juices flowing, and I leave feeling energised and full of ideas. Although the drive up from Cornwall can be a trek, it is always well worth braving the M5/M6! Especially knowing that my favourite tea shop, Bird and Blend is there, as well as Fig & Sparrow ( the best Matcha Latte in Manchester!). I soak up all the hustle and bustle, visit every coffee shop, museum, and bar that I have time for. Then by the time I leave to head back to the quietness of Cornwall, I am ready for the peace and quiet (and a beach). Best of both worlds .

I think it is impossible to take a bad photo of Cornwall, its landscapes, pretty towns and villages and stunning coastline make for an endless subject. I never get bored with taking pictures of the same cottages, beaches, and coffee shops. But there is nothing like not being able to go further than your local area for discovering hidden gems that you might have overlooked before. Even after living here for 10 years, there are still so many places on my list that I have not visited yet, and this Summer I fully intend to tick some off. Cornwall has so many secret spots to swim, and also river swimming is popular, and I want to do more of both this year.

This Weeks Happy – Exploring Fowey

Pretty Fowey

Exploring Fowey Cornwall

I live less than 5 miles from the beautiful harbour town of Fowey, but I very rarely go there. I tend to head in the other direction, but I wanted to go there for a sunset walk while it was Winter and quiet (before all the tourists descend).

I love exploring the cobbled windy streets & taking photos of the beautiful houses. One of the things I love about Fowey is the river, it’s beautiful, and it makes me feel calm and peaceful. I like to sit looking out over the river whilst the sun sets, and it’s the perfect end to the day.

Light Shop Fowey

Fowey has the perfect selection of shops including my favourite home wear shop Brocante, a very small but well stocked Joules’ boutique as well as lots of places to eat and get yummy cakes to take home. Also on this latest visit I stumbled across this Industrial Lighting Shop which was incredible and well worth a visit. They had a huge selection of nautical and industrial reclaimed options, I have my eye on one in particular and I think I am going to pop back and treat myself to it.

Sams Diner Meal

We really wanted to visit our favourite place to eat in Fowey, Sam’s, but it was closed for refurbishment (typical) so we drove to their new Diner. To my surprise they had quite a few Vegan options, including a Vegan Hot Dog (which sounded very tempting) but I opted for the Falafel Burger which came with chips and a cabbage salad. It was delicious & huge. I love an old school sesame seed bun, not these brioche buns which burgers seem to be served on nowadays.

The Diner is new, and I thought it was a little cold inside, and I am not 100% sure about the decor, it was a little hit & miss, but the menu is good, and the staff were very helpful when letting me know about their Vegan options. They also do an extensive healthy breakfast menu, so we might pop back one morning to give that a go, breakfast is my favourite meal of the day.

We are planning a day to Penzance next week and quite honestly I can’t believe we have lived in Cornwall for 18 months and haven’t visited yet. I’m really looking forward to it, if you have any recommendations for places to eat and drink in Penzance let me know.

St Ives is only one hour from where we live in Cornwall and although we visited a little over 5 years ago we haven’t been back since, so we thought it was about time we paid it another visit.

I don’t think I can describe just how beautiful this Cornish coastal town is, it feels slightly magical and so laid back. The sea is an incredible colour and it looks more tropical than Cornish, St Ives is also home to some of the most beautiful golden sandy beaches I have ever seen.

We spent the day walking all through the narrow cobbled back streets which are lined with traditional white fishermen’s cottages & I love it when they have pretty coloured front doors & window frames. The weather was bright and warm the day we went which meant we could took our time wandering the lanes and also sitting on the harbour wall watching people swimming and the fishermen landing their catch of the day.

You are quite spoilt for choice for cafes & restaurants and if you just venture off the main streets a little you will find so many sweet places to stop for tea & cake. There is even a Vegan chocolate shop! If you get the chance I highly recommend making the trip to St Ives, its friendly, beautiful and when the sun is out it feels like you’re in the South of France not England.

Cornwall Week #3

The Ship Inn Fowey Cornwall

Polkerris Cottages

We are starting to get in to our groove in Cornwall, and have found our perfect spot for coffee everyday and favourite evening walk (we are creatures of habit). This week I also turned 37, because we had just spent a fortune on the move we kept celebrations low key and took a trip to Polkerris and Fowey. We have been before a couple of years ago and it is so close to where we live so it was nice just to pop there for a couple of hours. It started off a little cloudy but turned into such a beautiful sunny morning it was so nice to spend some time by the river and relax.

I don’t think I will ever get tired of seeing the sea or the beautiful white wash cottages.
