Makeup I Took To Scotland

Whats in my Makeup Bag

I thought I would show you what I took with me on my recent trip to Scotland. I went to visit my family & stayed almost 3 weeks. I tried not to limit what I took but really thought about what I was using daily & tried not to take products I knew I wouldn’t use. So here are the contents of my makeup bag. Oh & I won this cute makeup bag last year in a blog giveaway, it’s so cute don’t you think? It fits a lot in & as you can see I barely filled it (very proud of myself for not overpacking).

Whats In My Makeup Bag

Makeup I Took To Scotland

For eyes, I took my MUA Palette & Benefit Big Beautiful Eyes Kit & one Mac single shadow in Naked Lunch. I rarely do anything other than a neutral eye & the MUA Undress Me Too Palette is ideal for travel as it is slim & you get 12 wearable shadows to pick from. I like that it’s affordable too so I’m not worried about it getting damaged and I have taken it away with me quite a few times this year & I’m still loving it. The Benefit Big Beautiful Eyes Kit has a small Boiing Concealer & 3 gorgeous quite neutral shadows. I love this for a night time look & the shadows are so creamy and long wearing its a Kit I have had for years & I love rediscovering it.

I took 2 Mascaras both are firm favourites of mine one is the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara which is a jet black long-wearing mascara which gives my lashes volume. They look so long & fluttery after a few coats of this. The brush is quite thick but I like that you can coat each individual lash & get right to the root to get that extra volume. Love this Mascara. The other one in my makeup bag is the Seventeen Back Lash, I love this mascara for making my lashes look thick and long without being OTT for daytime and it also holds a curl really well. This is one of if not the best budget mascara I have tried.

I took two concealers with me (well three if you count boiing in the Benefit Kit). The Garnier Caffeine Anti Dark Circles Roll On this has lasted me so long, every time I use it I think it must be due to run out soon but still the product keeps coming out. I like to use this under my eyes as the rollerball is cooling, the product it quite liquid in consistency and I find it is easy to blend and it gives a nice amount of coverage. I like it as a base on which to apply my second concealer. That being the Rimmel Wake Me Up I like to apply this over the Garnier one as it gives a little more coverage which in some places I really need and it also makes my under eye area look a little more radiant.

Makeup Bases

I knew I wouldn’t need a full coverage foundation whilst in Scotland and so I opted for two lighter bases, the Seventeen CC Cream and the Mavalia Moisturising Tinted Cream. I like that the Seventeen CC Cream has SPF 25 and it gives me a light but even coverage, this lasts quite well on my skin but I do like to wear the Clarins Instant Light Complexion Base under it just as a brightening primer and they make a great duo for healthy looking skin. Not heavy but very good for fresh glowing skin. The Mavalia Moisturising Tinted Cream* gives better coverage but the shade I have is a little dark for me however I blend it out & make it work. This tinted moisturiser gives you a lovely even finish and wears well throughout the day, I do have to apply powder to my t zone with this but that means I get an extra few hours wear. Who knew Mavalia did makeup as well as fab nail polish?

The L’Oreal Nude Magique Blur Cream is a product I’m on the fence about. It does smooth out imperfections and reduces the appearance of pores but after a few hours, it makes my skin look a little greasy. I wish it didn’t do this because if not this would be such a brilliant product, my makeup applies so well on top of it & the initial results are great. So if you don’t have an oily complexion this might just work very well for you. I’m going to continue to use it & see if I can find a way to make it work. Let me know if you use it & how you find it works best for you.

Blushers

Let’s talk cheek products. As you can see I bought a few options. I will start with my favourite which is the Soap & Glory Solar Powder which is a two-toned bronzer. I like to swirl my brush around both shades, sweep it across my forehead & down on to my cheeks which adds a little colour & glow to my very pale skin. The lighter shade has a little sheen to it & the slightly darker brown is matte. Very handy having 2 shades. I think this bronzer gives me a sun-kissed glow & a touch of natural colour. I think I have used it every day since I bought it back in May.

My Mac MSF in Natural is what I use as a powder most days. It leaves my skin looking smooth and keeps my makeup in place. It’s hit pan & I know any day now it’s going to crumble into nothing so I need to repurchase it ASAP. Mac MSF in Soft & Gentle Its adds so much radiance to my face & when I do wear it I fall in love with it all over again. I find this also wears a really long time on my skin no touch ups necessary. So glad I have this in my collection.

The two smaller baked cheek products are from e.l.f and I had totally forgotten about these, rediscovering them just before I went to Scotland, so I thought I would take them with me to show them a little love. These are both finely milled and give your cheeks a pretty highlight. Maui is the bronzer and this looks gorgeous in the winter to give the skin a little colour & a warm glow. Pinctastic is a highlighting blush with pink and beige marbling, mixed together it brightens up your cheeks and leaves them looking flushed and glowing. The shimmer isn’t too OTT but looks fresh and is a beautiful highlight. These elf baked blushers are great value for money.

Wet n Wild blush in Pearlescent Pink this reminds me of NARS Orgasm its beautiful on & the subtle shimmer gives your cheek a lovely healthy glow. The pigmentation & quality of this wet n wild blush is incredible considering the purse-friendly price tag. The last cheek product I took with me to Scotland was the Sleek blush in Sunrise this is the perfect colour for Autumn / Winter as its a pink toned brown with gold shimmer. It really warms up your complexion and gives you a little colour. I love the quality of Sleek Blushes & need to get a couple more.

So that’s what I took with me. I did take my Clinique Chubby Stick in Roundest Raspberry & a couple of lip balms. Oh & I thought I took my DHC liquid Eyeliner but when I got to Scotland I realised I’d packed the Eyeko Skinny Liner. I hate that liner so was gutted & spent the whole time with no eyeliner.

In My Makeup Bag Feb 2014

Makeup Bag Edit

As a complete makeup addict I like to change up the products I have in my makeup bag on quite a regular basis, I tend to rotate on a weekly basis. If I love something it tends to stick around a little longer. Im sharing with you the products I have been using these past two weeks.

Dr Jartt Water Fuse Beauty Balm – I bought it before Christmas and have been pretty much using it since. I don’t like to wear a full coverage base as I have quite a few freckles and I like them to show through, otherwise I look like I have no features. This BB Cream gives a very fresh & glowing light coverage. It evens out my skin tone & gives coverage enough to hide the redness around my nose. So I get a lovely natural looking base, this water based BB Cream is aimed at people with more Oily Skin (like me). So if you’re looking for a lightweight base which keeps oil at bay then this is for you. I bought this when it was 1/3 off in Boots.

Soap & Glory Solar Powder – I use this to give my face a slight sun kissed look & a hint of colour. It is a bronzing duo & like to swirl my brush to pick up both shade on my brush & sweep it across my cheeks, temples and down my nose. The lighter shade has a hint of shimmer while the darker of the two is matte.

Seventeen Phwoarr PaintI have been using this to conceal blemishes and to cover the redness around my nose. It works well for both & if i remember to powder the coverage lasts a good amount of time without having to touchup. This is quite a heavy duty concealer, I warm it up in between my fingers so it is easy to blend and that seems to do the trick. Its a handy concealer to pop in your handbag and the fact it has a little mirror in is perfect for checking its still in place & for applying lipstick! I have the shade Fair.

Makeup Bag

Inika Kohl Eyeliner 05 Black Caviar* – This is a lovely intense black eyeliner, it is very creamy and great to blend out for a smokey eye.

Miss Sporty Cat’s Eye Palette in Mineral Earth – This eyeshadow quad is forever in my makeup bag, it is perfect for achieving a pretty neutral eye & the lightest shade makes a pretty inner corner highlight. I urge you to try this, it’s amazing quality and very pretty. Its small and handy for travelling.

Miss Sporty Liquid Concealer – This is another very budget friendly product, like most people I’m on the hunt for a concealer that does everything & more, sadly this isn’t my HG concealer but it is very creamy and hydrating, I have the shade Light & I use it under my eyes to brighten & make it appear that I’ve had 10 hours sleep. It does a pretty good job. I like it more than the Collection one (a lot more) as I find this blends better and is less drying. I have the shade 001 Light.

Makeup Bag

Rimmel Lash Accelerator Endless Mascara – This mascara makes my pathetic eyelashes look both long and thick, its a really long wearing mascara and I get no flaking throughout the day. Word of warning, don’t apply too much as your lashes will end up very crispy & spider like (unless thats your thing).

Wet n Wild Blush – Until I used this I wasn’t sure what shade suited my skin tone best & then I realised it was peach toned pinks. This Wet n Wild blush is called Pearlescent Pink and is subtle but so very pretty. It makes my complexion look alive and fresh. It gives my cheeks just enough colour. I adore it and have worn it almost everyday for a whole month. I’ve heard a few people compare this to NARS Deep Throat & I can see the resemblance.

CarmexThe perfect winter lip balm. I go back to this time & time again.

Maybelline Brow DramaI like how this gives my eyebrows enough colour so they look neat & tidy but not overdone. This is more a day brow product as you aren’t able to get the full brow look using this. It also keeps my brows in place like a brow gel so you get colour & a setting product in one. I use my HD brow palette if I want a more dramatic brow look. I have the shade Medium Brown.

Pink leather pouch is from Zara & is meant to be a clutch bag, but I use it at a makeup bag.

My Favourite Neutral Palettes

As much as I try to step outside of my comfort zone and try wearing some colourful eyeshadows I just feel a little 80’s. I don’t posses the skills needed to make fun eyeshadows work, they end up looking like a mess. So I always retreat back to my beloved neutral shadows where I am comfortable. I thought I would share with you a few of my favourite Neutral Palettes.

Neutral Palettes

So first up is the Vivo Colour Block Unprotected Palette – This has 12 shades and has a good mix of matte & more shimmery shades. You will need to wear a primer with these shadows for them to last throughout the day. I have worn every shade in this palette but I especially like the 2nd row, that has seen alot of love. This Vivo palette is a bargain and you can pick it up for £3.99 in their online store

Wet n Wild Comfort Zone Palette $4.99 – This is one amazing palette. The shadows are very pigmented and soft, they are easy to apply and blend. There are no matte shades in this palette but it does have pretty metallic and shimmery colours. You get eight shades in this palette and once again every shade is wearable. I haven’t used the light green as much as the other shades but I have worn them all at some point. The left hand side shades get the most wear & in particular the 2nd shade from the top I wear all over the lid on days I want to wear as little makeup as possible. It’s like a rose gold shade and is very pretty. This is an American Brand, but often you can find it on Amazon or eBay.

Naked 1 Palette – Since my collection has grown this old faithful doesn’t get as much love as it used to. Its such a trusty palette and you can achieve so many looks with it. You get 12 shades and I love all of them apart from Creep, which I never seem to wear. I love Smog & Toasted the most out of the twelve shades. You get two good matte shades a few metallics and some shimmer so a little something for everyone. Now I’ve blogged about it I’m going to use it a little more and fall back in love with it.

5 Neutral Palettes

BarryM Natural Glow Shadow & Blush Palette £6.49 – This is the newest addition to my palette collection and although it says it has a blush in, the blush is not good at all and I never use it. It is chalky and has very little colour pay off. The shadows on the other hand are nice. You get six eyeshadows and there are two good matte shades. There is a little fallout but nothing you can’t work around. I just wish the blush wasn’t in this palette.

Last up is the MUA Undress Me Too Palette £4 – This has 12 shades in and has been compared to the Naked 2 Palette, I don’t own that palette so can’t say if it holds up as a dupe but I love this palette. The packaging might feel a little cheap and plastic but it is thin and easy to travel with. I have never used the black shade but it is SO pigmented (it scares me). You get some good mattes and a mix of metallic finishes and shimmers. A primer is well worth using as these shadows are not the longest wearing and would benefit from a little help. Everytime I use this palette I can’t believe how little it cost. For £4 everyone should own this palette.

So they’re my 5 most used neutral palettes – I’d love to know if you have any favourites.

USA Beauty Purchases

I went to San Francisco with one mission – aside from enjoying what SF had to offer, I wanted to buy drugstore beauty items. I didn’t want to spend a fortune on things as I have so many unused items at home in my collection. So I wanted to hunt out some American Favourites & I landed quite lucky. San Francisco has the most amazing Walgreens. It’s on 2 levels and the makeup & beauty section is massive and very well stocked. This particular one was very close to my hotel so that made me very happy and I often found myself in there at 9pm browsing the aisles whilst it was fairly quiet.

The other drugstores I went into were CVS & Target, I wish there was an ULTA in San Francisco City but the closest one was quite far out so I was a little gutted but I still managed to buy quite a few exciting things and here they are.

San Francisco Purchases

I know a few things I bought are available in the UK, but American prices are so much better than ours. I am most excited to use the Sonia Kashuk Eyeshadow Duo in Diamond Life $7.29. This has one matt soft brown and shimmer cream colour so a great little duo.

The Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser $8.99 – I bought the brightening one. I know these are being released in the UK but I just couldn’t resist buying this. I have always wanted to try a Milani Baked Blush & I opted for the Rose D’Oro its a pretty peach pink with a hint of shimmer. Great for the summer.

I have also heard some great reviews of the Jordana line and products from this line are so affordable and seem to be always on offer. I bought a few things, first up Is their Fabu Liner Liquid Eyeliner in 01 Black $2.99 such a bargain, I love liquid liner and I’ve a few on the go & will do a comparison post soon. I also bought the Jordana FabuBrow Eyebrow Pencil in 03 Dark Brown $2.99 and the Jordana Metal Rocks Eyeliner in 01 Green Envy $2.99, this reminds me of the Stila Eyeliners will be interested to see how they compare. Last up from Jordana I bought a lipgloss it’s the Jordana LipShine Natural Glaze in 03 Raspberry $1.99.

The Wet n Wild stands were few & far between and no store seemed to carry the whole line, but I did manage to buy a few items. The ones I’m most excited for are the colour icon blushes in Pearlescent Pink and Heather Silk these cost £2.99 each. Also at the last minute I bought one of their creme shadow pencils in 130 Pixie and it is so creamy and has the nicest glossy sheen. I wish I bought a few more colours as it was only $1.99

I had such fun browsing all the American offerings and there was so much more I wanted but you can’t have it all and where is the fun in that. I’m sure I will be heading back State side in the near future and my wish list has started again. I have a few more bits so show you but will pop them in to a separate post.

Let me know if you’ve tried any of the products I bought and link me if you have done a review on them.
